Obituary for Winston Jones

On July 20, 1948, God blessed J.C. and Sammie Mae Jones with a strongminded and strong-willed baby boy. During the rearing of Winston and his siblings Joseph, Pamela, Jack Charles, and Flora, they were instilled with a love for God through their Christian journey. Winston began his Christian walk at an early age with Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. In his adult life, he united with Ebenezer United Methodist Church under the leadership of Reverend Maggie P. Young. He continued fellowship at the Will of God Family Ministries under the leadership of Pastors Alvin and Glenda Clay.

Winston graduated from H.B. Pemberton High School with the class of 1966 and later attended Bishop College. Shortly after college he joined the United States Army and was later promoted to 2 Lieutenant before leaving. Upon his return home, Winston married Geraldine Robinson, and into this union a daughter was born and named Sonya Carol. Further in his life story, Winston married and celebrated 45 years of love with his high school sweetheart, Alice Jenkins. Into this union two daughters were born, Avionne Denise and Pamela Michelle. Let us not forget, Winston took great pride in taking on the role as father to Chantelle Renee’ and Sonja Althea. Winston had a special niece Zenobia that he considered his own, and he also became a father figure to the son he never had, Lacy Bigelow.

Winston was full of wisdom and gave the best advice, but was also a hardworking man. He worked for Marshall Pottery and later started his career at Texas Eastman Chemical Company until his retirement of 26 years. Retirement didn’t last for long before he decided to go back to work for Walmart and finished his working days at Lowes.

Winston was a swim teacher and lifeguard, master craftsman, pool shark, a dominoes master, a Pac-man wizard and had a love for playing baseball. When he was not working or building cabinets, you could find him on someone’s pond fishing for his family’s weekly Friday night fish fries.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Sammie Mae Jones; maternal grandparents and two brothers-in-law.

Those who are left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Alice; children, Chantelle Johnson (Roy), Sonja Turner, Sonya Carol Everitt (Terrance), Avionne Jones and Pamela Jones (Will); grandchildren, Mikala Turner-Reid, Gene Autry Williams III, Joshua Reid, Morgann Jones-Dumas, Samantha Everitt and Thomas Everitt; great-grandchildren, Laila Elizabeth Reid and Amias Gene Williams; siblings, Joseph Jones (Mary), Pamela Collier, Jack Charles Jones (Rozella) and Flora Alexander; 5 brothers-in-law; a host of other relatives; nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends, Rev. Alvin Clay, Larry Hodges, Rev. CD Hollands and Rev. Clyde Jackson.

Winston was looked upon as a father figure, a confidant, role model and mentor to many. He loved his family unconditionally.
