Obituary for Mattie Goynes (Griffin)

Mattie Goynes (Miss Mattie) daughter of the late Pinkie M. Walker was born May 2, 1930 in Carthage, Mississippi. She departed this life peacefully on Sunday April 4, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loved ones in Jefferson, Texas at the age of 90 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Miss Mattie accepted Christ as her Savior as a young girl growing up in Carthage, Mississippi. She attended the public schools in Carthage. After graduating from high school she moved to Detroit, Michigan to find employment. It was in Detroit that she met the love of her life, Dan H. Goynes Jr. They lived in Detroit for 11 years and later relocated to Jefferson, Texas. They were happily married for 55 years. To this union they shared 7 children together.

She was known to many as “Miss Mattie” because she was a very high spirted person. She was a woman who loved her family as a Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin and friend. Miss Mattie touched the lives of many with her amazing strong passion for life. She loved meeting people and she was a friend to everyone she met.

Miss Mattie enjoyed many hobbies as gardening, collecting antiques, listening to music and going to garage sales or flea markets, talking every day on the telephone to her friends and family but, most of all she enjoyed her family gatherings and reunions. She dedicated her life to caring and providing for her husband and children. In life, Miss Mattie was loved by her family and memories of her will always be in their hearts. She was called home to rest by the Lord but her love for her family will always be their guide and be with them forever.

Left to celebrate her memory are the following children, Robert Goynes, Diane Gholson (Tyrone), Loretta Barry, Dan Hill Goynes III, and Coleman Goynes; along with 7 grandchildren, Marcus Gholson (Rosamond) and Jonathan Gholson, Kenley Barry, Denise Goynes, Dan Hill Goynes IV, Preston Goynes and Brooke Goynes; and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Goynes (Freeman); four great-granddaughters, Michelle Gholson, Akalie Barry, Adrina Barry and Paige Goynes; one brother, Howard Walker (Uncle Buster); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and friends.

Miss Mattie was preceded in death by her husband Dan Hill Goynes, Jr. on March 19, 2009; a daughter, Denise Goynes on August 18, 2007 and a son, Freeman Goynes on July 29, 2003; several brothers; sisters and other relatives.
