Obituary for John "Mack" Smith Sr.

Mr. John Lewis Smith Sr. was born on August 24, 1936 to Ennis Smith Sr. and Mary Ella Miles Smith. He was educated in Harrison County public schools.

John accepted Christ at an early age. He and his family have been members the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, worshiping there for many years.

Mr. Smith was a man with a quality work ethic that was respected, admired and well known in this area. Even if you did not know him personally, you probably knew his work from the various jobs held during his lifetime. He was always neatly dressed; shirt tucked in and khaki pants starched to perfection. If you spoke to him, he always flashed a golden smile.

John was a hard working man. He obtained his real estate license and renovated homes to sale. He was employed at: Darco, Southwestern Electric Power Company as a tree line man and retired from the Texas State Highway Department. after serving 20 years. He was a bus driver for Marshall Independent School District, a courier for Marshall National Bank, Human Resources driver that transported people to various appointments, and the founder & owner of John L. Smith Maintenance Service which operated until his death. His word was his bond. If he said he would do something consider it done.

If you saw John around town he was in the cleanest vehicle. Cars and trucks were his hobby.

Mr. John Lewis Smith Sr. departed this life on Sunday, March 13, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rosie B. Smith; one son, Gregory D. Smith; his parents; one brother, Ennis Smith Jr.; two sisters, Addie B. and Marilyn Woods-Williams.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory, a daughter, Cynthia A. Smith and one son, John L. Smith Jr. both of Longview, TX; 3 grandchildren, Danisha Gray of Longview, TX, Jessica Shannon of CA and Timothy Smith of Ft. Worth; a sister-in-law, Earnestine Hurd of Los Angeles, CA; other relatives and friends.
