Obituary for James Hooper, Jr. Jr.

James Lee Hooper Jr., born on September 26, 1957, in Marshall, Texas, departed from this world on November 16, 2023. He was the son of James Lee Hooper Sr. and Dorothy Humble Hooper. James, affectionately known as “Hoop”, was revealed to many as a loving father, brother, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unforgettable moments.

James began his journey at Marshall High School, graduating with the Class of 1976. His pursuit of knowledge then led him to Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he spent a brief but impactful time. James' passion for life took him on diverse paths, and he briefly graced the NFL with the Oakland Raiders before transitioning to a fulfilling career as a truck driver.

Outside of his professional pursuits, James found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid football enthusiast, both as a spectator and a player. Fishing brought him solace, and he had a special place in his heart for the creatures of the sky and the land, spending moments feeding birds, crows, cats, and other furry friends.

A man of faith, James was a dedicated member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Marshall, Texas, where his spirit was nourished and his sense of community thrived.

James was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Humble Hooper Sr.; a sister, Donnie Etta Hooper Knighten; and a brother, David James Hooper. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories woven through the lives of those he touched.

He is survived by his son, Jarrell (Ebony) Hooper; a sister, Patricia (Charles) Davis; the love of his life, Myrtle Taylor; grandchildren, Kevin and Kaiden Hooper; bonus children, Akillia, Jermilia, Winston Jr., Christopher, and Fredrick; his best friend, Kenny Wayne Reeves; cousins, Gene Willis and Gail Duncan; nephews, Bryan and Brandon Davis, Roderick and Kenny Knighten; nieces, Tina Akuta, Kim Knighten and Rhonda Knighten; great-nieces great-nephews, bonus grandchildren, and additional cousins.

James Lee Hooper Jr. will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him. May he rest in peace, and may his memory live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
