Obituary for Augusta Lane (Porter)

Ms. Augusta Porter Lane began her journey on May 5, 1935, Ms. Lane was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. Her parents were William Thomas and Mary Porter, both precede her in death.

Ms. Lane move to Marshall at age seven to live with her devoted aunt, Mrs. Augusta Louise Porter Walton, who passed in February 1990.

Ms. Lane attended Park Elementary, Pemberton High School and graduated from Bishop College of Marshall, where she receive her Bachelor of Science Degree.

She moved to Los Angeles, California in 1955, to further her education. She spent a semester at USC, attended Sawers School of Business, and UCLA.

Ms. Lane’s places of employment included the Internal Revenue Service, the Army Procurement Office, and she retired from the Naval Regional Contracting Center in Long Beach, California.

She returned to Marshall after 26 years with the Federal Government. Ms. Lane reunited with the Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church, and immediately began playing for the Gospel Chorus. She joined the music auxiliary.

Ms. Lane served as the Building Fund Chair for several years under the Pastorage Rev. Paul Todd. She served as Church Clerk for six years, and sang in the 5th Sunday Choir.

She was a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, The Mary Church Terrell Club, and served as a Pink Lady at the Marshall Regional Medical Center.

Although Ms. Lane had no children, she claimed the following young people as her children: Winston Robinson (precede her in death), Joyce Jeter (Caretaker until death) Yvette King and Hazel L. Phillips.

Her favorite Scripture was the 23rd Psalm, and her favorite poem was “Candle Lighting Ceremony”
